Well, India has many rivers, which are the backbone of human civilization, and i would like to talk about Ganga river, which is officially and popularly called the Ganga. Although the Ganga is holy river of Hinduism, still it is sacred to people of all religious and it is personified and worshipped as the goddess Ganga.

In fact, people believe that bathing in Ganga cures illness, washes away sins and helps the individual on his/her path to enlightenment and freedom from the cycle of life and death. Actually i studied about it in my secondary education that it is a large river, originating from Himalayas and emptying into the Bay of Bengal.

However, I imbibed it’s pious importance from my mother. She told me, besides doing bathing, devotees throw the ashes of their deceased relatives in the Ganga river at Haridwar owing to the belief that it will bring the soul of the dead closer to salvation. The reason why i admire this river are manifold. Once i visited the Ganga situated in Haridwar and i was rejuvenated to experience the serene ambience around it. People of all ages were placing flowers and clay dishes filled with candles in the river. Moreover, pilgrims were taking river water home for use in rituals and some people were meditating sitting ion the river bank.

Looking at people throwing ashes in water made me remind the reality that ilfe is short and mortal and it should be spent joyfully without taking stress on futile matters. Not only this, the Ganga is the source of life for many people since they rely on it for their daily needs, such as drinking water suppies and for irrigating fields. Nevertheless, it is one of the most polluted rivers in the world and pollution is caused by both human and industrial waste due to India’s rapid growth as well as religious events. That said, despite this pollution, the Ganga river remains salient for Indian people.
